The Week's Road-Work Map: A Closed Ramp at U.S. 29, Two I-10 Stretches at Night, and One Lane Each Way on Nine Mile

The detour that matters most this week is at Exit 10: the U.S. 29 northbound ramp to I-10 eastbound is closed, and northbound drivers are being sent to a U-turn at Broad Street. Around it, FDOT's night work runs the length of the corridor through Thursday - and on Nine Mile Road, through Saturday.

The Week's Road-Work Map: A Closed Ramp at U.S. 29, Two I-10 Stretches at Night, and One Lane Each Way on Nine Mile (Pensacola Watch News)

Start with the closure, because it is the one that reroutes a commute. At the I-10 and U.S. 29 interchange (Exit 10), the U.S. 29 northbound ramp to I-10 eastbound is closed, according to the Florida Department of Transportation's weekly advisory for Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, published Monday. Northbound drivers are detoured to make a U-turn at Broad Street onto U.S. 29 southbound to reach the eastbound on-ramp. The interchange is also running a longer pattern: I-10's eastbound lanes are shifted north near U.S. 29, the interstate is down to two lanes in each direction between U.S. 29 and I-110, and the southbound access to the eastbound ramp is reduced - a configuration expected to remain through late 2026.

The interstate itself is a night job in two places. I-10 resurfacing runs from east of U.S. 29 to east of Davis Highway, with intermittent lane closures, traffic shifts and periodic ramp closures between mile markers 11 and 14, Sunday through Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. West of there, resurfacing from the Perdido River Bridge to west of U.S. 29 brings inside lane closures between mile markers 3 and 9 on the same nights and hours, for milling and paving. At the Nine Mile Road interchange (Exit 5), intermittent I-10 lane closures run the same Sunday-to-Thursday nights, while Nine Mile Road itself is reduced to one travel lane in each direction between the ramps from Sunday through Saturday nights, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., with law enforcement on site - and the westbound on-ramp's temporary reconfiguration stays in place through late 2026.

Off the interstate, the week's other pinches are Garden Street and U.S. 98. Downtown, Garden Street between Pace Boulevard and North Donelson Street remains two lanes - one in each direction - through late 2026, with temporary side-street closures north of the street this week including a closure and detour at B Street, and on-street parking closed between A and L Streets. In Santa Rosa County, the U.S. 98 widening from Bayshore Road to Portside Drive brings median and turn-lane closures from Bayshore to Tiger Lake Drive, plus intermittent lane and median closures on that stretch Sunday through Saturday nights, 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., for paving. Election Day drivers headed to evening precincts cross several of these corridors after dark - the night work starts at 7 and 8 p.m., as the polls close.
