Hurricane Isaias Insurance Claims Approach $582 Million in Florida, Led by Santa Rosa and Escambia (Pensacola Watch News)

Florida's insured losses from Hurricane Isaias are approaching $582 million, according to the state Office of Insurance Regulation figures reported by the News Service of Florida. Nearly 55,000 claims linked to the October 9 storm had been filed as of Tuesday, with the majority coming from the western Panhandle.

The county split shows where Isaias hit hardest. More than 26,000 claims have been filed in Santa Rosa County and nearly 17,000 in Escambia County, followed by about 5,200 in Okaloosa County, more than 2,000 in Walton County and almost 2,000 in Bay County. Isaias made landfall near Destin as a Category 2 storm, and catastrophe modelers cited by the News Service put the most severe impacts in Destin, Pensacola Beach and Navarre, with major damage also observed in towns around Pensacola Bay such as Milton and Pace.

The Florida tally is the state-regulated share of a larger national loss picture: Moody's RMS estimated insured losses across multiple states at between $2.5 billion and $4.5 billion, and Karen Clark & Company estimated $3 billion in privately insured losses nationally. Six deaths in Florida have been linked to the storm. The claims count will keep rising as adjusters work through the Panhandle's damaged roofs and flooded homes.
