A Strong Cold Front Arrives Wednesday: Likely Storms Midweek, Then Lows in the 40s by Friday Night

Warm and breezy opens the week, but the National Weather Service has Wednesday circled: showers and possibly a thunderstorm at an 80 percent chance as a strong front pushes through, with a low severe threat - and significantly cooler, drier air behind it.

A Strong Cold Front Arrives Wednesday: Likely Storms Midweek, Then Lows in the 40s by Friday Night (Pensacola Watch News)

Pensacola's week splits cleanly in two. Monday and Tuesday are warm and breezy - the National Weather Service forecast for the area, published Monday, calls for partly sunny skies and highs near 78 Monday and 79 Tuesday, with east to southeast winds of 5 to 15 mph gusting as high as 20. The station's live feed (Open-Meteo), read at about 7:38 a.m., opened Monday mainly clear at 67.5 degrees on its way to 75.6, with a rain chance of just 2 percent - one more dry day for Election Day eve errands and the last of the FEMA registration points' weekday sessions.

The turn comes Wednesday, and it is the week's weather story. A strong cold front pushes through bringing likely showers and thunderstorms: the Weather Service puts Wednesday's chance of precipitation at 80 percent, the week's peak, while noting that the severe weather threat remains low. The rain chance begins rising Tuesday night, at 30 percent after midnight, and lingers at 20 percent into Wednesday night before the front clears. The station's own feed is more conservative on the same day - a drizzle code at a 52 percent chance and a warmer high of 83.9 against the Weather Service's 79 - so the honest summary is this: Wednesday is a wet day on both pictures, and the disagreement is over how wet and how warm, not over whether the front arrives.

Behind the front, the week changes character. The Weather Service expects significantly cooler, drier air to filter in for the late week, setting up pleasant, sunny days - mostly sunny Thursday near 78 and Friday near 76 - with nighttime lows sliding from the mid-60s early in the week to around 56 Thursday night and into the 40s by Friday night, near 49 both Friday and Saturday nights. That timing matters locally: Friday is the first day of the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show at NAS Pensacola, and Saturday's show day is forecast mostly sunny near 74. Sunday closes the week mostly sunny near 72 with a 20 percent chance of showers. Election Day itself, Tuesday, sits in front of the rain's arrival - partly sunny near 79 by day, with the first showers possible only after midnight, after polls close.
